Which Laser Treatment Is Best for Your Skin? CO₂ vs. IPL
One of the most common questions I hear from patients is: “Which laser treatment is best for my skin?”
The answer depends on what you want to treat.
Some treatments are better for brown spots and redness, while others are designed to improve acne scars, fine lines, enlarged pores, sun damage, or uneven skin texture. How much downtime you are comfortable with also plays an important role in choosing the right treatment.
At Ohara Dermatology in Beverly Hills, we offer IPL for pigmentation and redness—and we are excited to now offer CO₂ laser resurfacing with the DEKA Tetra SmartXide® CO₂ laser.
The addition of CO₂ resurfacing significantly expands the range of skin concerns we can address. Depending on your skin and goals, Dr. Aivaz can customize treatment from lighter CO₂ resurfacing with CoolPeel® to deeper CO₂ resurfacing for more significant wrinkles, acne scars, sun damage, and textural concerns.
So, which treatment may be right for you?
Here’s what you need to know.
CO₂ Laser vs. IPL: What's the Difference?
The simplest way to think about the two treatments is:
IPL
Best for: Sun spots, brown spots, redness, visible blood vessels, and uneven skin tone
Downtime: Minimal
Think: Pigmentation & redness
CoolPeel® CO₂
Best for: Fine lines, enlarged pores, mild sun damage, and uneven skin texture
Downtime: Less than deeper CO₂ resurfacing
Think: Lighter skin resurfacing
Deep CO₂ Laser Resurfacing
Best for: Deeper wrinkles, acne scars, significant sun damage, and more pronounced texture concerns
Downtime: More significant
Think: Deeper skin resurfacing
In short: IPL is primarily used to address pigmentation and redness, while CO₂ laser treatment focuses more on resurfacing the skin and improving texture. With CO₂, the treatment can range from lighter CoolPeel resurfacing to a deeper treatment depending on your concerns and desired results.
CO₂ Laser Resurfacing: Our Newest Skin Resurfacing Treatment
We are excited to now offer CO₂ laser resurfacing at Ohara Dermatology using the DEKA Tetra SmartXide® CO₂ laser.
CO₂ laser resurfacing works by delivering controlled laser energy to the skin. Depending on the treatment depth, it can remove damaged superficial skin while stimulating the healing response and new collagen production.
One of the biggest advantages of our new CO₂ laser is customization.
CO₂ resurfacing does not have to mean the same treatment for every patient. Dr. Aivaz can adjust the treatment based on your skin concerns, goals, and comfort with downtime.
That gives us two distinct approaches: CoolPeel® for lighter resurfacing and deeper CO₂ resurfacing for more intensive skin renewal.
CoolPeel®: A Lighter Approach to CO₂ Laser Resurfacing
For patients interested in resurfacing with less downtime, Dr. Aivaz can perform CoolPeel®, a lighter fractional CO₂ treatment.
CoolPeel may be considered for:
Fine lines
Enlarged pores
Uneven skin texture
Mild sun damage
Overall skin quality
CoolPeel allows us to use CO₂ technology with a lighter resurfacing approach than a deeper CO₂ procedure.
For someone interested in the benefits of CO₂ resurfacing but concerned about significant downtime, CoolPeel may be an option worth discussing.
Deep CO₂ Resurfacing: More Intensive Skin Renewal
For patients with more significant skin concerns, Dr. Aivaz can also perform deeper CO₂ laser resurfacing.
Deeper CO₂ treatment may be considered for:
Deeper wrinkles and fine lines
Acne scars
Significant sun damage
Rough or uneven skin texture
More advanced signs of photoaging
The main tradeoff is recovery.
Deeper CO₂ resurfacing generally involves more redness, swelling, peeling, and visible healing than CoolPeel, IPL, or ResurFX.
The ability to adjust treatment intensity is important because not every patient needs—or wants—the same degree of resurfacing.
Some patients prioritize a shorter recovery. Others may be comfortable with more downtime in exchange for a more intensive treatment.
During your consultation, Dr. Aivaz can evaluate your skin and discuss which approach may be most appropriate for you.

How Does CO₂ Compare With Our Other Laser Treatments?
CO₂ isn't automatically the right choice just because it offers more intensive resurfacing.
For many patients, IPL may still be the better treatment depending on the concern being addressed.
Here's how they compare.
IPL: Best for Sun Damage, Brown Spots and Redness
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. Although patients commonly group IPL with laser treatments, IPL is technically a light-based treatment rather than a laser.
IPL is particularly useful when the main concern is pigmentation or redness rather than skin texture.
IPL may be used to address:
Sun spots and brown spots
Freckles
Redness
Visible blood vessels
Uneven skin tone
Signs of sun damage
Following treatment, brown spots may temporarily darken before gradually flaking away. Temporary redness or swelling may also occur.
If your main concern is brown spots, discoloration, or redness, IPL may make more sense than choosing a resurfacing laser.

CO₂ vs. IPL: Which One Should You Choose?
The easiest way to start is by identifying your main skin concern.
Brown spots, redness, or sun damage?
Consider IPL.
IPL primarily targets pigment and redness rather than deeper skin texture.
Fine lines, enlarged pores, or mild texture concerns?
Consider CoolPeel CO₂.
CoolPeel provides a lighter approach to CO₂ resurfacing and may be appropriate when improving texture and overall skin quality is the goal.
Deeper wrinkles, acne scars, or more significant sun damage?
Consider deeper CO₂ resurfacing.
Deeper CO₂ provides a more intensive resurfacing option but requires more recovery.
Of course, skin doesn't always fit neatly into one category. Many patients have a combination of pigmentation, sun damage, scars, fine lines, and textural changes.
In those situations, different treatments may be recommended at different times rather than expecting one device to address everything.
What Is the Best Laser Treatment for Acne Scars?
For acne scars, I am generally more likely to consider CO₂ laser resurfacing than IPL.
CO₂ allows for more intensive resurfacing and may be considered when acne scars or textural changes are more significant.
However, not all acne scars are the same.
Ice-pick, rolling, and boxcar scars have different characteristics, and some patients benefit from combining laser resurfacing with other acne-scar treatments.
That's why I evaluate acne scars individually rather than recommending the same laser for everyone.

What Is the Best Laser Treatment for Wrinkles?
The best laser treatment for wrinkles depends on how deep the wrinkles are and the overall condition of your skin.
For fine lines and early textural changes, lighter CO₂ resurfacing with CoolPeel may be considered.
For deeper wrinkles and more significant sun damage, deeper CO₂ resurfacing may be appropriate.
The goal isn't simply to choose the strongest laser.
It's to choose the right level of treatment for your skin and the amount of recovery you're comfortable with.
What Is the Best Treatment for Sun Damage and Dark Spots?
Downtime is often one of the biggest factors patients consider when choosing a laser treatment.
A simple way to compare them is:
IPL → Minimal downtime
CoolPeel CO₂ → Less downtime than deeper CO₂ resurfacing
Deep CO₂ → More significant recovery
The exact recovery period varies depending on treatment intensity, the area being treated, and your individual skin response.
This is why downtime should be part of the treatment decision from the beginning.
How Do I Choose the Right Laser Treatment?
There is no universally “best” laser.
When Dr. Aivaz evaluates your skin, several factors can influence the recommendation:
Your main concern: pigmentation, redness, acne scars, wrinkles, enlarged pores, or texture
The severity of the concern
Your skin type and skin tone
How much downtime you can realistically accommodate
Previous laser or cosmetic treatments
Your medical history and current medications
Whether you prefer gradual improvement or a more intensive resurfacing treatment
Skin tone is particularly important. Not every laser or light-based treatment is appropriate for every skin type, and certain treatments can carry a greater risk of unwanted pigment changes.
Ultimately, the right question isn't simply:
“What is the best laser?”
It's:
“What is the best treatment for my skin?”
Ready to Find the Right Treatment for Your Skin?
With the addition of our DEKA Tetra SmartXide® CO₂ laser, we can now offer an even broader range of skin resurfacing options at our Beverly Hills office.
From lighter CoolPeel® treatments for patients seeking less downtime to deeper CO₂ resurfacing for more significant wrinkles, acne scars, sun damage, and textural concerns, treatment can be customized based on your individual skin and goals.
CO₂ isn't necessarily the right treatment for everyone—and that's precisely why a consultation matters.
At Ohara Dermatology, I evaluate your skin, discuss your concerns and goals, and consider your skin type and downtime preferences before recommending a personalized treatment plan.
For some patients, one treatment is clearly the best fit. For others, different treatments may be used over time to address pigmentation, texture, scarring, and other concerns.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
There isn't one laser that is best for every type of wrinkle. Fine lines and early textural changes may respond well to lighter CO₂ resurfacing with CoolPeel®. Deeper wrinkles and more significant sun damage may be better suited to deeper CO₂ resurfacing. The appropriate treatment depends on your skin, the severity of your wrinkles, and your desired downtime.
-
CO₂ laser resurfacing are two options that may be considered for acne scars. CO₂ allows for more intensive resurfacing when appropriate. The best treatment depends on the type and severity of your scars, your skin type, and how much downtime you're comfortable with.
-
No. IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light and is technically not a laser. It uses broad-spectrum light and is commonly used to address pigmentation, redness, visible blood vessels, and signs of sun damage.
-
Both use CO₂ laser technology, but the treatment intensity and recovery are different. CoolPeel is a lighter resurfacing treatment designed to improve concerns such as fine lines, enlarged pores, and uneven texture with less downtime. Deeper CO₂ resurfacing provides more intensive treatment for concerns such as deeper wrinkles, acne scars, and significant sun damage but requires more recovery.
-
CO₂ laser treatment can be appropriate for many patients, but treatment must be individualized. Skin tone, medical history, sun exposure, and the risk of post-inflammatory pigment changes are important considerations. Dr. Aivaz will evaluate your skin before recommending CO₂ or another laser treatment.
-
The number of treatments depends on the technology, the condition being treated, and the degree of improvement you're looking for. Some treatments are commonly performed as a series, while more intensive resurfacing procedures may require fewer sessions. Your treatment plan will be customized after evaluating your skin.
